ABDICATION SOON
NETHERLANDS QUEEN THE HAGUE. May 12. Queen Wilhelmina announced in a broadcast that she would adbidate, “at the beginning of September,” in favour of Princess Juliana. Queen Wilhelmina said that her reasons were “increase in years, decline of powers of resistance and ability to work, and of the powers which are indispensable in taking responsible decisions in profound, complicated problems of which there are so .many at present ” Queen Wilhelmina said it was only at Princess Juliana’s urgent request that she postponed transferring the throne to her until after August 31, and the celebration of her 50-year reign. “My father was sworn in and installed on May 12, 1889,” she said. “I believe 1 can choose no better day than this to speak to you about the
future. 1 oelleve I must, In the interests of you all and of the kingdom, entrust the sovereignty to Princess Juliana, who, apart from wise insight, has the advantage of her age and young fresh powers. “I have reached this conclusion only after ripe consideration and only your interests and my feelings of duty were decisive.”
