WEIGHT MAY TROUBLE KILMANAGH IN STEEPLES AT GISBORNE MEETING: WHIPHAND NEAR BEST

(Herald Special Service.)

TOMORROW on the Makaraka racecourse the P.B. Turf Club will open its two-day winter meeting, which prefaces the associated Tolaga Bay-Waiapu one-day fixture. With racing on three successive Saturdays to attract visitors, a record meeting is hoped for. Really good even fields have accepted. The track is equal to any provincial course in the Dominion, and with anything like reasonable going the racing should he of a high order.

WAINUI HURDLES United Nations, 12.2, (2), at the previous Gisborne meeting this big mare found little difficulty in winning with 11.6 so that the extra 101 b. is a severe penalty at this scale of weight; nevertheless it would be a game critic who would say she would not win. Kilmanagh, 10.3, (6), will, in all probability, start in the Steeplechase, hut should an alteration in the present plans be made she will be a force to reckon with here. Zulu Boy, 9.13, (7), in his last effort, —and only recently at that —ran third with 10.3, so with a drop of 41b. the handicapper has indeed taken a risk. For this reason he may be popular with the public. The Scotchman, 9.11, (4), with United Nations, makes a very strong bracket and with six chances for a place there is no need to predict what will be the place favourite. Denny’s Gift, 9.6, (9). The youngsters who know their “Comics” might describe this entry as “Denis the Menace”, so we will leave it at that. Silvestre, 9.1, (5), is a splendid little fencer and in his last hurdle effort ran second to United Nations at Makaraka and now comes in on 91b. better terms. His chances are not to be sneezed at. but he is also in the cross-country event later in the afternoon. Highland Dale, 9.0 (3), has no form. Master Barcarole, 9.0 (8), so far has shown no promise in this department, in fact he jumps no better than Burma, another Hastings horse who a few meetings back came to Gisborne and failed to complete the course, on either day. General Dytup, 9.0 (10), on his prominent running on the Hawke’s Bay Cup day may spring a surprise here. WAIPAOA HACK HANDICAP Lady Oral, 9.0 (9). This Tauranga mare can be depended on to give a good account of herself and with recent winning form to back her chances up on may be one of the most fancied. Hazrine, 8.12 (13), on occasions can put on a good show, but is not to be depended upon. Lady Cocoanut, 8.12 (7), with an apprentice allowance of 71b., may be in the firing line at the finish. She has speed above the average. Mabel Knight, 8.9 (8), has not won a race for just on 12 months, but has not done a great deal of racing. She is due any day now. Farrier, 8.8 (19), has won on this track previously and is best when the going is not firm. On this occasion his wide-out barrier position is a factor he may not overcome. Dainty Moti, 8.7 (4), on her home track, will have to be given a chance and is right up to this class. Dickens. 8.3 (11), like all the Theio gets can gallop fast and it would cause no surprise if he finished in a good oosition. Trenecre, 8.3 (18), was a fair two-year-old, but has not raced since the spring, when in five starts she weighedIn three times. She may be all the better (or a race, so may do better later on this circuit, especially when drawn closer into the rails. Yalta. 8.0 (1), of late has been rather disappointing, but having drawn the “ace” is just the type to slip the field at the start and last long enough to win. Crispin, 7.3 (6), has just a rough show. Torino, 7.12 (20), has no form. Comedy Star, 7.11 (2). has generally run his best races at Gisborne and is the trying, honest type that “punters" are not afraid of. La Bian, 7.11 (3), will have a track to her liking and must enter calculations on her spring form. Gentleman Jo, 7.10 (16), has been rather disappointing so that on this season’s form looks like being one of the outsiders. Johannes, 7.10 (14), is not a confident recommendation. Of the others weighted on the minimum. Queen’s Padre (12). if started and Robert Keith (5), are the pick. The former in all probability will he reserved for the First Maiden, while Robert Keith would cause no surprise if he collected one of the prizes offering. PUBLICANS’ HACK PURSE Sir Warrior, 9.0 (5), on a soft track would be “Public Enemy No. 1” in this Lord Latour, 8.9 (1), has not won a race, but has to give weight away to five winners engaged here. He ran two fine races at Hastings for second placings, and on that may be a favourite.

Gyros, 8.8 (9). has won this season. In his lgst effort he was fourth over a mile and a quarter, which was prefaced by a second to United Nations over the same distance in a highweight at Wairoa so that he must bo a consideration. Master Gary, 8.8 (8), has won over this course, so why should he not have something to say in the decision of this event. Master Moti, 8.8 (4), is not exactly a strong fancy, but on form must be considered. Aslrophe, 8.4 (3), might be suited by the smaller field as this horse-shy gelding generally races best when not cramped for room. He might surprise. Sporting Way, 8.2 (6), has not raced for some time, but once won (about two years ago) a mile and a quarter race at Hastings. Lack of race condition is not in his favour. Lord Boswells, 8.1 (2), was third at Hastings on Hawke’s Bay Cup day, but in his two starts since was never in the call. Friendly Lady, 8.0 (7), on form has not much show. ★GISBORNE STEEPLECHASE KILMANAGH (7), 11.6. on her fourth and second at Hawera appears the logical favourite, but 11.6 is going to trouble this Siegfried mare. WHIPHAND 9.7 (6), should be somewhere near his best, and if not the favourite may be very close to it. MASTER BARCAROLE, 9.1 (5), on his jumping ability is not without a show as jumping is something always to be given credence to in a crosscountry race. BONNIE SCOT, 9.0 (3), has done a fair amount of jumping over the last few years and has shown winning hurdle form on the Makaraka track. FIND OUT, 9.0 (1), both on the flat and over hurdles has failed to come up to expectations, or the form he is really capable of. Will he make amends in this department? SILVESTRE, 9.0 (4), had his first run over hurdles at Awapuni last July when he ran a promising fifth, but in his only other effort fell early in the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Cup. He is not without a rough show. WAIWAINUI, 9.0 (8). In the spring of 1945 this rising 11-year-old ran two close fourths and a second in the Auckland district over the tall timber. One is forced to go back that far to find him earning any money. MAIDEN STAKES NO. 1 All 8.0. Bandmaster (12), has no form. Baby Fox (11), a chestnut Foxbridge (?), as a threc-year-old ran third in her first race, followed by three unplacings. Last season she did not start, while in her one race this season was an “also ran.” Cheerful Night (4), has been in the money a few times so looks like a place hope that might not go astray. Gold Frock (15). has no form. Johannes (13), is just a rough possibility. Lady Kindinc (4). since running second at Wairoa last February has been unplaced each time she started. Queen’s Parade (9), if started in this event looks like being the favourite as he has speed and is now somewhere near right. Of the others, what is known of their capabilities does not appeal. MAIDEN STAKES NO. 2 (All Bst.) Carter Fell (12) on account of racing experience and condition enters calculations. Miss Majesty (1) has shown speed on the track, hut has yet to weigh-in. Omapai (10) in 13 starts this season was once third Phanion (11) on his second last Saturday at Gisborne looks the pick of this basket. Village (7) is on the up-grade, but public form is no help. Of the others, the writer must confess little knowledge, except Bramble Leighon, a “dark horse.” *TE HAPARA HANDICAP Findon, 9.0 (9), is by no means overweighted and would only need to he half fit to lead this field home. Dark Flash, 8.1 (15), always tough to heat at the provincials, is in rare racing order Sorrell (14), 8 0. is as honest as they I come. A mile might suit him admir- ' ably. Cot-Case, 7.13 (11). is not exactly at home over a mile, but has won over less ground, and at the weight might be classed as well treated. Embrolita (1), 7.8, has run well enough on a few occasions since coming over from Queensland to say that he is no'. without a show.

United Nations (3) 7.7 and her bracket The Scotchman (2), 7.1, are also in the hurdles, hut either would not he without a place show in this event. Flying Dink (6), 7.3, would only need to reproduce her Hastings New Year form to give this lot a tough task. Tussock (7), 7.1, is just the type that may surprise, hut lias yet to win as far as a mile. Beau Devoir (17), 7.0, one fourth in seven starts this term is his best credential. Brown Atom (16), 7.0, generally leads for about a mile in his mile and a quarter races, so that he might surprise. Coolgardie (5), has no recent form. Ernbrac, 7.0 (13), on a really soft track would be a consideration. Flare Path (8), 7.0. was nowhere at Hastings last month, but at the Easter Feilding meeting in open company was fourth and third, which gives him a small chance this time. Nancy Vaals (12), 7.0, is not without a lightweight’s chance, the same applying “to Omaio (10) on his third to Welcome Guest and Prince Coronach at Hastings on Cup day last month. Pavaals (4), 7.0, a promoted hack and a winner last March, might be included among the lightweight possibilities. KAITI HACK HANDICAP (Apprentice Riders) Hazrine (9), 9.0, Dainty Moti (1), 8.9, Master Moti (3), 8.3, Yalta (4), 8.1, and Comedy Star (6), 7.12, are all engaged earlier and have already been commented upon. Clive Bay, 8.13, has a penchant for provincial tracks and has already proved up to ttie average hack class. Master Rich (7), 8.4, is held in fairly high regard in some quarters, and would not surprise if he was made favourite in this event. Don Robin (5), 8.0, was recently reported to have been rather seriously injured; maybe that report was exaggerated. He was second last month at the Bay of Plenty meeting. Victory Bridge (10). 7.13, has had seven starts and as many “nowheres” this season. Arvakur Star (2), 7.7, ran two good races at Hastings not so long ago when she was not blessed with the best of passages. She should take part in the settlement of this issue.
