CONCESSION ASKED
MAORI LABOUR ADJUSTMENT OF PRICES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 14. Considering that the advancement of Maori welfare that had accrued through the provision of suitable Maori employment in Rotorua justified some interim concession in the mattcr of prices, the assistant-director of the Price Control Division. Mr. J. P. Lewin, yesterday largely agreed to an appeal before the Price Tribunal by California Productions (N.Z.) Ltd. against a previous costing formula laid down by the division. This firm, which manufactures _ apparel and employs almost entirely Maori labour, has been manufacturing for nine months, in which period it is stated the operations resulted in a loss. Mr. Lewin said he agreed that the employment of considerable Maori labour in the early stages of the company had had the effect of raising the overhead above that of normal business making comparable goods. He emphasised that the position should be reviewed after September 30. The tribunal decision was reserved.
