Maize Picking Starts
Mai»e-pickcrs stnriec! harvesting on the Gisborne flats this week. It is expected that yields will he slightly lower over-all as a result of the dry growing season. However, some of the crops made steady growth throughout the season and probably they will yield very well. It was obvious during the summer that some areas of the flats were doing the crops well. Gisborne Pip-fruit Crop Quantities of Ballarats and Cox's Orange Pippin surplus to the requirements of tiie consumers of this district have been coming forward for storage from Gisborne orchards this season. This week 1200 cases of cooking apples were railed out of the district. Storage of the crop has had to be handled diligently and an officer of the Internal Marketing Division said it had been largely a matter of “put and take." As short-term varieties had been withdrawn from storage to meet the requirements of the' market they were replaced by the longer-term varieties.
