ATTRACTIONS ON FIELDS OF SPORT

SATURDAY PLAY PROGRESS IN RUGBY SOCCER AND HOCKEY BASKETBALL OPENING Rugby competitions in the Poverty Bay, East Coast and Wairoa districts will be advanced a further stage tomorrow. Soccer and hockey series will also be continued and the competitions of the P.B. Basketball Association are to commence. Last season’s senior champions, Old Boys, meet H. 5.0.8. on the Gisborne Oval grandstand ground in the feature game of the six divisions in the P.B. Rugby Union competitions. Old Boys lost in the season's opening series to Celtic, who last week played a draw with H. 5.0.8. The teams for tomorrow's encounter were keen rivals last season. While Old Boys took the decision in each of their three matches the margins were small The score in the third-round game was 5—3. On form so far displayed this season the odds may favour H. 5.0.8. for tomorrow, but the Old Boys combination will be expected to show improvement on their first game and the issue is very open. Though the strong Celtic side will be expected to collect a further two championship points, much interest will attach to the display of the new Union team, who last week accounted for Marist. The curtain-raiser on No. 1 ground is to be provided by H. 5.0.8. and Celtic juniors, who have respectively defeated Union and Marist and been beaten by Old Boys and are level on points in the two series of games already decided. Old Boys, the only unbeaten team in the grade, play Y.M.P. who have defeated Union and had been beaten by Marist. In the concluding series of the Intermediate grade first round, the unbeaten High School players, who last week ran up the tall tally of 60 points against Celtic, tomorrow play Old Boys, who defeated Celtic in the opening series and lost last week to H. 5.0.8.
