FIGHT TO SAVE LIFE
WAIROA CHILD PEANUT IN LUNG TRANSFER TO WELLINGTON (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 30. Desperate efforts are being made to save the life of a three-and-a-haif-year-old girl from Wairoa who is now in the Wellington Hospital with an cinshelled peanut in one of her lungs. She is Barbara Stead, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raine Stead. Frasertown. When it was found that a peanut had lodged in the girl’s bronchial tract on Tuesday she was rushed 60 miles by taxi from Wairoa to the Napier Public Hospital. During an operation to recover the peanut the obstruction moved down to the lung and the child’s condition quickly deteriorated. All Tuesday night and Wednesday she was kept alive in an oxygen tent. Yesterday morning her condition showed some improvement. She was transferred by the Napier Free Ambulance to the Wellington Public Hospital. She will be operated on this morning if her condition permits. Last night it was stated to be still serious. A medical authority to whom the case was referred pointed out that a peanut if inhaled could prove very dangerous as the husk of the nut would be likely to break into numerous small pieces. _____________
