STOCK MOVEMENT

MATAWHERO RAILWAY EFFECT OF DROUGHT FEWER BEASTS CARRIED Drought conditions in Hawke's Bay and other outside farming centres had a marked effect on the stock dispatched through the Matawhero station last year. Over 18,000 fewer animals were handled than in the previous year. Matawhero station is one of the biggest handlers of stock in New Zealand and until the beginning of March this year the number of head of stock dispatched was greater than for the previous year, when over 25,000 cattle and nearly 250,000 sheep were handled. The drought in other areas caused an almost total suspension to the railing of stock from the district, and consequently figures for the year ended March SI showed a drop. Last year 232,937 sheep—ls,loo fewer than the previous year—were* sent from the Matawhero assembly yards by train. Cattle totalled 22,163, a drop of 3200. The quantity of timber handled at the Matawhero station also showed a decrease of 90 tons to 4284 tons.

Other goods handled totalled 35,158 tons, an increase of 625 tons. Revenue received from other goods was £9235, a decrease of £687, but parcel revenue increased from £644 to £731. Passengers boarding the outwardbound trains at the station last year numbered 1047, and the revenue collected from them, £430, was £3O less than in the year ended March, 1947. Although the quantity of most goods sent from the station decreased, the total revenue collected on outward goods increased by £6309, to £36,731. Most of this increase is accounted for by the increase of 15 to 20 per cent in freight, rates imposed during the past year. The number of beasts carried from outside into Matawhero station was lower by 2718 last year, 25,902 sheep having been brought in. Cattle handled also decreased by 364 to 2421. Timber increased by 128 tons, to 307 tons, while other goods rose by 4000 tons, to 12,834 tons. The total revenue collected on inwards goods at the station last year was £13,532, an increase of £2300.
