BETTER STOCKED SHOPS
SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE NEW ZEALAND COMPARED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 28. "There is a much greater variety of goods selling in Sydney and Melbourne than in anv New Zealand city," said Mr. B. K. Smith, a director of a Wellington retail firm, on his return. This was largely because Australian importers could import anything they wanted from the sterling area without a license. New Zealand buyers attempting to order from Australia, however, had two hurdles to surmount—both import and export controls. It was difficult to get worsted and cotton goods from Australia, firstly, be cause of the New Zealand import restrictions and. secondly, owing to the Australian control of exports. But there were many Australian goods available if Now Zealanders could get the licenses "In Sydney the new look has gone over with a bang, and ballerina skirts with a longer hemline are becoming almost common in the street. It seems that they are there to stay. The new look has not taken on so widely in Melbourne. ’ While imported women’s shoes were expensive, shoes locally made were available fit very reasonable prices, Mr. Smith added.
