MAN’S SIGHT REVIVED
DELICATE EYE OPERATION MELBOURNE, March 30. A delicate eye operation was performed at the Royal Melbourne Hospital today to restore the sight of a young man of 25. This was the first operation of the kind to be carried out under the newly established eye bank, and similar to those being performed in New York. The operation took 45 minutes. A local anaestheic was used. The young man had a conical cornea, which was so bad that; treatment in the usual way, by contact lenses, was of no use. He could see to get about, but not to work. A small circle of the cornea _or “watch glass” of his eye, five millimetres in diameter, was removed and a similar piece from the eye bank eye was sewn in.
Special fine silk sutures, which can be obtained only in America, were used to sew the cornea. The surgeon, who recently returned from America, brought back a few of these with him. But many more will be needed when the eye bank is fully established.
