PRINCESS TAKES OATH OF CARTER AT INVESTITURE

Princess Elizabeth, whoni the King made a Lady of the Garter on the eve of her marriage, the Duke of Edinburgh, Field-Marshal Lord Alexander, and four other Knights-elect, in a ceremony at St. George’s Hall, Windsor Castle, today, swore the ancient oath of the Order of the Garter which Edward 111 created 600 years ago today, in honour of the martyr St. George.
Lord Alexander flew especially from Canada for the ceremony which is the first full charter of the Garter since 1937 Solemn ritual marked the ceremony. Headed by six heralds of the College of Arms and six officers of the Order, the King and Queen entered the chamber where 14 Knights of the Garter, fully robed in mantles of kingfisher blue and wearing the full Insignia of the order awaited them. His Majesty, assisted by the Dukes of Norfolk and Devonshire invested the Princess with the Garter on her left arm and then placed over Princess Elizabeth's left shoulder the George, a broad riband of kingfisher blue with the gold band of the Order depending from it His Majesty finally invested her with the star and collar of the Order. The Princess then made a deep obeisance to His Majesty and took her place with the Knights Companion. After the oaths had been taken His Majesty entertained the Knights and Ladies to luncheon. Then Their Majesties. still in their robes, walked in procession io St. George's Chapel where the solemn service of installation was held.
