PLANT PURCHASES

COUNTY _ROADING PROGRAMME FOR COOK £12.000 OUTLAY AGREED Items of new plant now on order for the Cook County Council aggregate £10,281 in value. A total of £SBOO is required over the estimated credit of £4500 available in the plant replacement account as at March 31 last. The county clerk, Mr. R. K. Gardiner told the council yesterday that CoiiO had been spent from the plant replacement account last year, and taking into account the probable credits for the current year's operations, there should be £4500 available for new purchases. Plant on order, and for which provision must be made, included a grader at £4500 maximum, a tractor dozer at £2352, a compressor at £979, a winch at £450 a truck at £1250, and a tractor : power unit at £750. j The council had seen, prior to con- ! sidering the report, a film depicting the work and adaptability of an Ante- . lican grading machine costing £5805, ! including essential tools not included , in standard equipment. Messrs. M. L. Holden and M. T. B. Idall inquired whether this machine could not replace the grader and the tractor-dozer included in the current orders. Wheels for Plant Mobility Mr. F. S. Bowen strongly supported | the change, pointing out that the tractor-dozer was on tracks, whereas for mobility the council required plant | on wheels. The chairman, Mr. E. H. Baker, favoured keeping the grader on order at £2772 to £4500, and ordering. the £6175 combination grader and dozer. Account was also taken of the need for opening up the Waerenga-o-kuri quarry, which would save 14 miles of cartage on every trip. The machinery required to open the quarry was estimated to cost £4OOO. It was reported that this purchase could be financed through the Main Highways Board, and that payment could be spread over years. On the motion of the chairman, the council decided to order one of the film-subject graders, a light caterpillar grader a compressor, a winch, a truck and a tractor power unit, at a total cost of £12,006. No decision was recorded in the meantime about quarrying machinery.
