TAXI COMPANIES
NEGLECT ALLEGED BETTER CONTROL URGED fP.A.) DUNEDIN, April 15. “Taxi companies are neglecting some of their responsibilities,” said Mr. M. S. 'Galloway, Wellington, at the municipal conference. He was proposing the adoption of a remit designed to give better control by the licensing authorities of the taxi industry. The remit asked that companies and organisations holding themselves out as providers of taxi services (whether or not holders of taxi-cab ' service licenses') be made subject to some or ail of the special conditions incorporated in those licenses and also asked that power be given to examine the official records of licensees, companies and other organisations. “The remit will bring about a more efficient running of the taxi industry, and the travelling public will get the service to which it is entitled,” said Mr Galloway. “If you ring for a taxi and the companv accepts the message and the taxi fails to turn up you can’t get at the company. It simply puts the responsibility on the driver. An examination of the records will stimulate a sense of responsibility in the companies.” The delegates were informed that Mr. P. Thomson. Stratford, had been nominated by the association to constitute with representatives of the Transnort Department and the Federation of Labour, a committee of inquiry to report on the taxi industry. The remit was seconded by Mr. W. Appleton, Wellington, and carried.
