GISBORNE-DEVON FRIENDSHIP TIES
r J[\HROUGTT a series of incidents, some of which happened years ago, the Gisborne Townswomen’s Guild seems to have its destiny linked with that of the Newton Abbott Guild in South Devon, England.
Several members of the Gisborne guild have had contacts with the English guild through relatives or when travelling, and some time ago. as a token of friendship, Gisborne members had made and dispatched to Newton Abbott a beautiful casket of inlaid wood, which was received with great pleasure and displayed in the business area of the town. Now, Mrs. B. Wickerson, a member of the Newton Abbott Guild, who has arrived in New Zealand with her husband and son, has decided to live in Gisborne. She has joined the Gisborne Townswomen’s Guild, thus adding further interest to the two guilds’ friendship.
Mr. and Mrs. Wickerson arrived at Gisborne a fortnight ago, it being just on four months since they left home. Put on a Stone in Weight Mr. Wickerson has already put on a stone in weight and both are emphatic that parcels of food for Britain are an absolute necessity. Speaking at a meeting of the Townswomen’s Guild they urged the sending of solid meat, like beef, (not lamb and green peas with precious weight wasted by gravy); cheese, honey and fats. They also think that growing children upwards of five years are most needful of food in Britain today, and give the example of an 11-year-old boy weighing only 4st. Ulb.
