EASTER REGATTA

INTER-CLUB YACHTING WON BY NAPIER’S ARIEL The third and final competitive race between yachts representing the Gisborne Yacht Club and the Napier Sailing Club was held on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a win for the Gisborne boat. Gale. The race was sailed over the same course as the first two, in a steady northerly breeze. All boats were away to a good start, Gale taking the lead early and holding it all the way around the course. Ariel (Napier), Typhoon (Napier), and Ariel filled the next three positions, Typhoon being unfortunate enough to hook a large piece of seaweed round the centre-board. This took some time to clear. Gale finished first, followed by Ariel (Napier), Ariel, Vulture, Lexia, Mighty Atom, Breeze, Typhoon, Swift, Beth, Damn Fine, and Salome. On corrected times Gale was still placed first, Ariel (Napier) second, and Salome third. In the Tauran"a class race, Terry, sailed by B. Holshire, finished first, followed by Chick, Aloha, Dianne, Falcon and Nipper. Terry also gained most points from the three races and was placed first in the competition, followed by Chick and Dianne (Napier). Gained Most Points Ariel (Napier), with a first, second and third in the three races gained most points in the open class competition. Gale was second with a first, second and sixth and Ariel third, with a second, third and sixth. A visitors' race for both classes was held yesterday morning, the open class being won by Vulture (I. Cross), followed by Ariel (C. Gordon) Typhoon (J. Lloyd), Gale (P. Wrightson) and Breeze (F. Williams). Following the race Typhoon and Ariel (Gisborne), set their spinnakers for a run to the harbour entrance, but Ariel’s spinnaker became out of hand and the yacht capsized, resulting in a ducking for the crew, who were picked up by the trawler Rosa. In the Tauranga class race Falcon (B. Nelson) finished first, Dianne (I. Mills) second, Terry (L. Frus), third, and Aloha (J. Husheer) fourth. The Hawke’s Bay crews and boats return to Napier tomorrow.
