FREEZING WORKERS

MINIMUM WAGE ORDER

UNPAID HOLIDAYS ISSUE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 17. Whether the minimum wage order. 1945. entitled freezing workers to the minimum wage for a week which included three unpaid holidays was argued in the Court of Arbitration today. According to a statement of the facts, it had been agreed that workers covered by the New Zealand (except Westland) freezing workers’ award, 1946, were entitled to certain holidays, including Easter Saturday, and three other days to be mutually agreed on. For these three days there was no provision for payment.

Today’s case was an appeal from the judgment of Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, in which he had found for the defendant company, the Gear Meat Company, in a claim brought by the inspector of awards for the minimum wage for each of two workers in of a week, including the three unpaid holidays. Addressing the court today. Mr. G. F. Grieve, for the inspector of awards, said the point at issue was narrow but important, because of the large number of employees who would be affected by the decision.
