FEMALE STORE STOCK

Outside buyers competed freely and there was some local competition from the outset of the second day of the second cattle fair of the season conducted at the Matawhero saleyards yesterday, values throughout showing an advance of up to 10s per head. The market for young heifers strengthened. The yarding of female cattle was not heavy, but there were numerous small consignments. Toe larger pens were not required as no big drafts came t'orward. There were some fresh-condi-tioned lines, but the majority of the younger animals showed signs of having come oiT fairy hard country. There was buying strength from the Waikato, Te Puke, Whakatane and Hawke's Bay and the buyers from those districts showed interest in most lines. The Waikato was buying cows in calf. Cows and calves did not come forward in any numbers and made up to £9 7s for a small line in good order. Empty cows ranged from £5 2s 6d to £9 4s according to quality and condition and cows that had been with the bull realised from £8 3s to £9 17s. Three and a-half year heifers fetched from £8 7s 6d to £lO 6s; two and ahalf year from £5 5s to £8 10s, and 18-month heifers from £3 Is to £7 12s. Some of the individual prices were:— Dows and Calves. —Twelve good sorts of T.A. cows with 12 calves, £9 7s; 10 light P.A. cows with 10 small calves, on account of Whangara Block, £5 7s 6d. Empty Cows.—Twenty-five, P.A., in store order, on account of Whangara Block, £7 16s; 15, P.A., speyed, good store order, on account of John Tombleson est., Waimata, £8 15s; 24, P.A., young, good order, on account of Mr. D. Beer, Matawai, £9 2s; 14, P.A., on account of Mr. A. Wall, Paritu station, £7 15s; other smaller lines ranged from £8 8s to £9 4s.

Cows in Calf. —Twenty-five, Hereford, young, on account of Mr. A. Richardson, Tiniroto, b.w.b. since December, £8 3s; 14, P.A.-cross, good order, same vendor, £9; 11, Hereford, big framed, on account of A. C. Steele est., Tahunga, £9 10s; others ranged up to £9 17s for small lots.

Three and a-half year Heifers. — Twenty-four P.A., in good order, on account of Otara station, £lO 6s; 12 P.A., from Rakauroa, £9 11s.

Two and a-half year Heifers. — Twenty-six, Hereford, some light, on account of Patemaru station, Waingake, £7; 25, Hereford, b.w.b., some said to have had calves, £7 ss; 22, P.A.-cross, run as empty, some older, on account of Te Wera Block, Matawai, £8 ss; 74, P.A., good order, on account of Mr.' A. Wall, Paritu station, £8 10s; 74, Herefords, in good order, on account of Te Wera Block, £8 10s; 19, P.A.-cross, on account of Paritu station, £7 14s; 26, Hereford, light, on account of Rototahi station, Tolaga Bay, £6 10s; 16, P.A., in good order, b.w.b., on account of Mr. G. S. Bridge. Motu, £8 15s; 13, P.A., on account of Mr. S. B. Monck, Pehiri, £7 17s 6d; 20, Hereford, some horned, good order, £7 17s; other small lots, from £5 5s to £3 Is.

Eighteen-month Heifers.—Seventyeight, Hereford, horned, on account of Te Wera Block, Matawai, £5 15s; 35, P.A., in good order, an account of Mr. A. Wall, Paritu station, £6 7s; 20, Hereford, horned, same vendor, (p) £6; 17, Hereford, odd older heasl, on account of Mr. A. Richardson, Tiniroto, £6 15s; 16, Hereford, from Hangaroa, £6 15s; 14, P.A.-cross, horned, £6; 20, P.A., well grown, £7 11s; 18, P.A., same description, on account of Mr. H. Morice, Tiniroto, £7 12s; 12. Hereford, light and rough, £4 16s; 12. Hereford, culls from Matawai consignment, £3 Is. There was a better display of beef cattle in the fat pens yesterday than on the first day of the fair, the entry totalling 85. Values for cows ranged from £9 9s to £l3 ss, the top price being secured by the A. C. Steele est., Tahunga, with a pen of 13 Herefords. Heifers made to £9 18s for a lone entry, and a bullock sold at £ls.
