REBUKE TO MINERS
CONSTANT WORK NEEDED SERVICE LEAVE CLAIMS ’ SYDNEY, March 16. Stating that more continuity in coal production was needed before miners’ claims for long-service leave could be dealt with, the Coal Industry Tribunal, Mr. F. H. Gallagher, adjourned the hearing of claims until a date to be fixed. He referred to an application made recently by the Miners’ Federation seeking for its members long-service leave amounting to three months for each completed seven years of aggregate service.
“It is obvious that practicability of granting such a claim is dependent on the continuity of service on the part of employees whom it is proposed to benefit,” said Mr. Gallagher. "For the last three months, at all events, such continuity of service has not been forthcoming from a substantial section of the employees.” In 45 working days this year, losses in coal production from all sources totalled 465„503 tons. Most of the losses were caused by strikes.
