SUPERSONIC PLANES
TESTS IN AUSTRALIA? SYDNEY, March 15. Australia may become a testing ground in the development of highspeed aircraft, according to the chief scientist to the British Ministry of Supply, Sir Ben Lockspeiser, who is in Australia for the first conference of the Aeronautical Research Council. He said that Australia’s isolation and distances would be valuable to the Empire in exploring the field of supersonic speed. The planes of the future would be stronger, with even more powerful engines and there would be revolutionary changes in the system of controls. Other scientists to arrive during the week-end were the Australians, Professors W. L. Oliphant and Sir Howard Florey and the New Zealander, Professor Raymond Firth. They will help to plan research schools for the National University at Canberra. Professor Oliphant is a world authority on atomic research and Sir Howard Florey is credited with the discovery of penicillin and Professor Firth is a famous anthropologist.
