HARBOUR SILTS UP
CONCERN AT WESTPORT COAL CARGOES DELAYED WESTPORT, March 15, Westport at present needs lots of rain—to create the necessary freshes to clear silt which has almost blocked the bar to coal-laden ships. Bullcr district miners are hewing large quantities of coal, but it is not known what to do with it. . , In the past week the position of the bar has deteriorated to such an extent that the depth of water on the bar on Saturday afternoon was only sft. 6in. The previous lowest depth was 7ft. The position is causing considerable concern and is expected to have a grave effect on the coal mining industry in Bullcr, as there are only sufficient wagons available to rail half of the output from Westport to the east coast and other parts for shipment. It is almost six months since there was a flood or fresh in the bailer River to keep the shipping lane clear and the recently westerly set has resulted in considerable silting, __
