WALK ARE WATERSHED
NEARLY 3|IN. GUAGED GRADUAL FALL CHECKED Rainfall recorded at Waikaiemoana over the week-end fell just short of. 3iin„ according to renorts which reached Gisborne yesterday. The recorded fall to 9 a.m. on Sunday was 1.56 in., and for the succeeding 24 hours, a further 1.92 in. was gauged, bringing the two days’ total to 3.48 in. Last week Waikaremoana reached Its lowest recorded figure of 1990 ft. above sea-level, about 24ft. below the normal overflow level. The draw-off for electrical generation was then exceeding the inflow of water from the streams running into the lake, many of which were almost dry; and the level was receding at the rate of about lin. per day—part of the recession being due, of course, to evaporation under hot-weather conditions-
The week-end rain affected a large area in the high country from which Waikaremoana draws its water, and it is believed that much of the fall has not yet reached the lake. Yesterday’s report from the overflow point indicated that the lake was just holding its own against the generated demand for water.
