PRELATE’S ARREST

COMMUNIST AIMS “POLITICAL SCANDAL” VATICAN EXPLANATION i N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright.) (11 a.m.) _ LONDON, March 10. The Vatican newspaper Osscrvalore Romano claims that the left-wing press is unsuccessfully trying to turn the arrest of Monsignor Prettner Cippico on forgery and fraud charges into a political scandal. It adds that Communists had close contact with Cippico and were preparing to publicise the whole story on the eye of the elections “unless Cippico was willing to serve a foreign Power.” The Vatican at this point decided to issue news of the arrest. The Italian police said Cippico was arrested at the home of a former general of the Fascist Militia, Giovanni Gangemi, who is now in Switzerland.

The Associated Press correspondent in Rome says the police have detained Gangemi's wife and daughter for aiding Cippico and have also arrested Cippico’s personal secretary, Marcello Weiss. The Vatican charges against Cippico include forgery, dealing in foreign exchange for his own benefit and obtaining large sums of money from congregations under the pretence of making a film of the life of St. Francis.

Cippico before his exposure is alleged to have lived in a magnificent flat and to have had two cars.
