Keen Auckland Bowls

One of the most successful players of the Gisborne Bowling Club, J. H. Walker, who is also a member of the Onehunga club, reached the quarterfinals in the open pairs tournament of the Auckland centre last week, playing as skip with J. Macklow, one of the winning four at the Dominion championships this season. In one of the keenest struggles of the concluding series, they went down. 20-22, to F. Livingstone and A. Robertson (Onehunga) two others of the Dominion champion four, who went on to win the Auckland final. Commencing the final end Robertson led, 21-20. With Livingstone lying two very close shots at the change-over, Walker turned Macklow’s nearest bowl through the head to take the jack for a tie and then drew another counter to lay a win, but a perfect bowl by Robertson drew the shot to win the game by two points. Livingstone and Robertson outclassed Scott and Bremner (Epsom), In the semi-finals and won, 22-16, against L. Franks and W. C. Franks (Balmoral). in the final. The tournament drew the record entry of 270 pairs of whom 200 contested the open event.
