FREYBERG CUP RUGBY

N.Z. FORCES IN JAPAN THIRD BATT. A. IN LEAD (N.Z. Public Relations Service.) (10 a.m.) CHOFU, March 9. Though still leading in the Freyberg Cup Rugby competition, the A team of the Third Battalion, N.Z. Regiment, suffered a blow to their prestige last week when they were held to a 3-all draw by the low-placed Ascords (A.S.C. and Ordnance combined). Another upset occurred when the runners-up, Engineers, were overrun six to three by the Second Battalion’s B team.

Since its return from Tokyo, the Second Battalion A team has played seven games, won six and drawn one. It has moved into second place on the ladder when it was relinquished by the Engineers’ team. The points are now: Third Battalion A, 23; Second Battalion A, 21; Engineers, 20; Second Battalion B, 18; Medics (6th N.Z. General Hospital and Attached Personnel), 10; Ascords, 7; Sep (Signals E.M.E. and Provost), 5; Third Battalion B, 4; Headquarters, 2. Easton, of the Third Battalion A team of Raurimu, is still the most outstanding player. So far he has scored over 80 points. Others who have recently begun to show up are G. Hutton, Second Battalion, of Aratapu, North Auckland, W. P. Potaka, Engineers, of Mangaweka and A. A. Motland, Headquarters, of Taihape.
