BRIGHT 80 RUNS IN ONLY 32 MINUTES

MARIST_ SPF.F.D TEN-POINT VICTORY LEADERS IMPROVE THREE P.B. GRADES Requiring: 70 runs in 32 minutes to secure an outright win, four Marist batsmen briskly trounced the H. 5.0.8. attack and produced the tally with 10 to spare in one of the Senior A matches of the P.B. Cricket Association concluded on the Gisborne Oval on Saturday. The feat of fast scoring afforded players and spectators the most exciting half-hour experienced in the cur rent competition and gave the Marist eleven their first winning points of the season, A week earlier Marist had reached 174-6 in reply to the H. 5.0.8. opening score of 74 On Saturday the last tour Marist wickets added only 20 runs, but the total of 194 was 120 ahead of H. 5.0.8. The latter, again one man short, showed the improved score of 189 in their second strike. G. Slade, whose 21 was the best score in the H. 5.0.8. opening, was again the top batsman this time with 48 not out, second in the match only to ,J. Blanc's 74 for Marist on the opening day. Left with little more than half an hour before full time. Marist appeared to have little chance of improving on the sixpoint win. but the openers. Blane and C. Scholium, both registered boundaries with their respective first scoring strokes and proceeded to punish the bowling with swift action which realised the majority of the runs required for the 10 point decision before the partnership was broken. In the other Senior A match. Rugby O'd Boys, with 42 on the board for two wickets, reached 161 for the innings, but were still 19 runs short of the United opening score and the competi tion leaders took a six-point win. With 62. the R. 0.8. captain, T. M. Sharp, showed the day’s best total in the livi sion and the t.op score of the game, though only two in advance of the United captain. G. O. Rabone. who made 60 on the first day. L. R. Torrie. 31 not out in the United second innings produced the third best figures of the match. TOP SCORE OF THE DAY Features of Senior B games were the narrow victory achieved by United (A) with only seven runs to spare for a first-innings decision over H. 5.0.8. (White) and the success of United (B), who gained a six-point win against High School. The top individual performance was that of G. Elliott, whose 75 not out for the division leaders, Rugby Old Boys, was the highest of the day over all grades. Rugby Old Boys improved their lead over High School with a six point win against H. 5.0.8 (Blue). The day’s play marked the conclusion of the Senior B third round. High School (II), Second Grade leaders, also extended the margin, registering an outright win over Gold Top, while Rugby Old Boys, holding second position, scored six points in the game against Marist. An outstanding performance was given by the High School (II) bowler, D. Dalrymple. who took seven wickets for only 18 runs in the Gold Top second innings. Championship points to the credit of the respective teams on the conclusion of the day’s play are:— Senior A.— United. 40 points; Rugby Old Boys. 31: H. 5.0.8., 29; Marist, 13. Senior B. —Rugby Old Boys, 83 points: High School, 61: United (A), 56: United (B), 45; H. 5.0.8. (White), 40; H. 5.0.8. (Blue), 36.
