RANGE CHAMPIONS

INTER-CLUB MEET RAIT BELT TO JEUNE ASSOCIATION TROPHIES A record number of marksmen from the Wairoa, Nuhaka, Waimata, Rua•o:ia. Tolaea Bay, and Gisborne rifle clubs competed for the East Coast Rifle Association's trophies on the Sponge Bay range during the week-end. F. J. Jeune and R. Burson tied for the principal trophy, the Rait Memorial Belt, and in the shoot-off Jeune secured the honour to hold the trophy for 1948 by the narrow margin of one point. Third place in the championship was filled by a junior member of the Gisborne club, G. Jeune, who finished only three points behind the other two marksmen. The Taxi Cup for the highest scratch score at 300yds. resulted in a tie between J. Hart, Wairoa, and F. J. jeune. both having scores of 47 points. In the shoot-off Jeune was again successful to win the trophy by a single point margin. At 500vds. R. Burson registered a score of 49 points out of the possible of 50 and won the Townley Cup for this range. The 600yds. match for the Field Cup found most of the competitors in trouble owing to the difficult sighting conditions, S. Parkes proving the most successful at this range to score a popular win with the only rifle score of Pi. Team trophies competed for during the day comprised the Bulls-eye Plate for teams of live over 300, 500 and 600yds.: the Chambers Shield, over the 300 and 500yds. ranges; and the Pop Jeune Mug, for the 300 and 600yds. distances. Gisborne No. 1 team were successful in holding these trophies, Gisborne No. 2 being runner-up in the three matches and Wairoa No. 1 third At the conclusion of the shooting appreciation was voiced by the presidents of the various clubs present on the excellent day's sport. This was chiefly clue to the efforts of the executive and the markers. Special thanks were extended to Captain L. R. Stichouiy for his supervision in the butts and to Mr. W.
