N.Z. RECORD PRICE

GREASY JWOOL 60* CHRISTCHURCH SALE BIDDING WELL SPREAD (P.A.) Christchurch, Dec. 18. The prices for fine wools exceeded all expectations at the first main sale of the Christchurch selling season, which was ' held yesterday. A record price for New Zealand greasy wool of 60d was established, and the prices were so good that the gross return from the sale also possibly will be a record. The great bulk of the better style Corriedale and halfbred ewe wool changed hands at between 40d and 50d a pound and sales at more than 50d were numbered in scores. The bidding was well spread among a full bench of buyers, but for extra choice lots the local mills were dominant. The Continent bought strongly, and Bradford buyers were in at encouraging levels and lifted a good proportion of the offering. The catalogue consisted of 30,151 bales, practically all of it new season’s wool. The passings were a minute fraction of the offering' and Joint Organisation did not buy a bale. Compared with the April sale, the best of the fleece wool of above 50’s counts were 20d dearer yesterday. All except the very best of the hogget wools were erratic and some of the less attractive were cheaper than they were at the October sale. All wools below 56's were erratic and though on the average were better than in April were a little below the' October level. Crossbreds sold fairly steadily, but were from a par to easier than at the recent North Island sales.

Crutchings and lower pieces, which were relatively cheap at the October ; sale in comparison with fleece wools, j rose sharply and returned to a reasonj ably comparable price. The rise for | some type's was Bd. The sale began at 8 o’clock in the morning and did not end until 11 p.m. I OFFICIAL RANGE OF PRICES I Merino, GO/64’s. —Extra super, 50Jd to : sSid; good to super, 45d to 50d; aver- : age, 39d to 44d; inferior, 35d to 38Jd.
