GIRLS AND BOYS

FUN ORGANISATION Y.MC.A. ACTIVITY In order to provide children with some diversion and thus relieve the strain on parents during the present period, when it is inadvisable for the younger fry to congregate, a children's amusement column is to be published in the Gisborne Herald every Wednesday and Saturday night. At a meeting convened by the Gisborne Y.M.C.A. on Monday it was resolved that the Y.M.C.A. should be utilised as the central agency and be sponsors of the project. The offer of the Gisborrje Herald to allow a twiceweekly insertion of programmes was accepted with thanks. A session for children is also to be broadcast from station 2Z.J. between 7 and 7.15 p.m. each evening from Monday to Saturday Monday’s meeting, which was representative of a number of organisations, was presided over by the Rev. B. M. Tasker. A co-ordinating committee consisting of Mrs. P. L. Hardcastle, Misses D. Williams, E. M. Hyland, the Rev. B. M. Tasker and Messrs. R. A. Keeling, S. E. Wilks, L. Grey Barton J. K. Messenger, P. Heath, C. V. Hogarth. T. Parkinson and R. H. March was appointed. Mr. Keeling was elected chairman. Miss Hyland, deputy chairman. Messrs. Hogarth and March organisers, and Miss Williams recording secretary.

The theme of the project discussed at Monday’s meeting was the formation of an army of girls and boys, to be known as G.l.’s, standing for Gisborne Invincibles. The object of these G.l.’s would be to fight against boredom with fun and games, and other interests. Representatives of the teaching profession offered their services for arts, crafts, hobbies and recreational games to be conducted in conjunction with the Y.M.C.A. programme. An important part of the project will be a visit to all the streets in Gisborne by Santa Claus and children are to be asked to write letters to Santa who will collect them at the gate of the child’s home.
