WAR VETERANS’ HOUSES

CO-OPERATIVE SCHEME WELLINGTON PROPOSAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 16. A co-operative housing scheme similar to a plan whereby homes are built for ex-servicemen in California has been suggested for Wellington by the Mayor, Mr. W. Appleton. Mr. Appleton said two-bedroom homes were being built under a Californian scheme for the equivalent of £I2OO to £I4OO in New Zealand currency. He suggested a similar co-opera-tive effort on the part of the City Council, master builders, and the unions in the building industry and other interested parties. The objective should be to build homes on a low deposit and to eliminate unnecessary costs. He hoped the council’s housing committee would be able to produce a tentative scheme for discussion after the holidays.
