FRANCE'S PLIGHT
DEFICIT_MOUNTS LIVING ABOVE INCOME HEAVY LOSS ON STRIKES (N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright.) (10 a.m.) PARIS, Dec. 16. France is now living beyond her income at the rate of £1,000,000,000 a year, according to a Government commission which has been estbalished to draw up a national balance sheet. The inflationary drive has reached an acute phase. Reuter’s correspondent says that if the new wages and prices stabilisation programme fails to halt the inflationary tendencies, the national deficit in the first half of 1948 would be £400,000,000. According to the British United Press’ correspondent in Paris, the recent strikes cost France £340,000,000, which is three times the value of the aid she expects under the Marshall plan.
