Award to Wairoa Student A student of the University of Otago, Mr. Athol B. Forsyth, who : passed through the Gisborne High School with distinction, has received notification of the award to him by the university of the Smeaton junior research scholarship in experimental science. Mr. Forsyth is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Forsyth, Frasertown. - Mangahoui Stream Work . T The detailed plans decided upon to relieve portions of tire .properties of Messrs. A. Dods and Lr Dolemsn, Ngatapa, from the damage caused, by, the fioodin gof the Mangahoui Stream are to be referred to the settlers concerned to ensure their agreement before the work is submitted to the Soil Conservation Council. This decision was made, at a meeting of the P.B. Catchment Board yesterdav following the receipt of a report by the board’s engineer, MijA. D. Todd.
Potato Conference Today ‘ The two representatives of the Gisborne Potato Growers’ Association, Messrs. E. J. Stewart and K. R. S. Grarer, who left Gisborne during the week-end to interview the Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser, the Minister of Marketing, Mr. E. L. Cullen, and the aid-to-Britain National Council chairman, Mr. P. F. Walsh, conferred with the Ministers in Wellington today. The Gisborne growers’ delegates were to seek a solution of the glut on the early potato market, a situation particularly disturbing to the industry in this district. Children’s Home Appeal
A large number of Gisborne children have at one time or another stayed at the Heni Materoa Children’s Home and there are a considerable number there now. It is for these children that tne collection is held and this year It will take place on Friday. Willing helpers have come forward to assist with the work and will be posted at the bridges and through the town. The committee feels that a generous response from tne public will not only be of material assistance in running the home, but also will directly benefit members of the public who may need to .leave tneir children there.
Establishment of Grasses Concerning the establishment of grasses on slips, Mr F. W. R- Graham, asked the Grasslands Division representative Mr E. A. Madden, at yesterday s meeting of the P.B. Catchment Board i l it had been found generally that sulphate of ammonia was more satisfactory than phosphates. Mr Madden said that on slips organic matter ar.d nitrogen in-particular, were lost when the surface soil moved away. Until clover was established, which fixed nitrogen, synthetic nitrogen such as sulphate of amonia was most satisfactory, but too costly for general work of that nature.. Personnally, lie would like to see thousands of tons of artificial nitrogen m New Zealand. The introduction o( nitrogen did produce results.
