POOR QUALITY CHARGE
AUSTRALIAN EXPORT COMMISSIONER REPLIES (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Dec. 16. Commenting on a recent cable report from Australia that some firms had been exporting poor-quality goods to New Zealand the Australian Trade Commissioner, Major-General J. J. Murray, stated that these complaints related only to a few small deliveries. During the last six months he had received five complaints and he doubted whether the total invoice value of the goods involved would exceed £6OOO. whereas the total imports from Australia in that period would be in the vicinity of £7,000,000 . Thus less than 0.1 per cent of the goods landed had been subject to complaint. Major-General Murray remarked that in recent weeks he had been told by numerous importers that they were extremely pleased with the quality of goods being received from Australia. The principals of two firms in Welington told him that many Australian metal trade products compared favourably with competitive English and American lines. Major-General Murray added that, with a view to establishing long-term export markets, the Australian Government representatives overseas were reporting to their headquarters in Australia all complaints .which came to their knowledge, so that they could be brought to the notice of the offending firms and an attempt made to prevent recurrence.
