BABY LEFT IN CAR
CRITICISM OF MOTHER (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 16. At a recent Plunket meeting in Taranaki when the question of the prevalence of leaving babies over long periods in closed cars was discussed, one case was cited of a young baby being left in this way at a golf tournament recently. The day was extremely hot and the windows of the car, in which the baby was left, were closed. Hearing a baby screaming, a cabby investigated and on finding a baby in great distress from the heat in the closed car and perspiration streaming down its face, he ran some distance to the golf-house hoping to find the mother of the child. But she was not there.
Several women went to the car and decided to bring the baby to the golfhouse. It was not until much later that the mother came looking for her baby. She had followed the golfers throughout the tournament. When the dangers of her actions and her thoughtlessness in leaving the baby over such a long period were pointed out to her, all the mother could answer was: “Oh, the child was all right when I left it.”
