MODERN HONG KONG
REBUILDING PROPOSALS VISIT BY ARCHITECT HONG KONG, Nov. 26. The re-planning of Hong Kong in conformity with modern needs and standards is to be the subject of a preliminary report by a distinguished Scotsman, Professor Sir Patrick Abercrombie, who is spending a month studying conditions in the colony. One of the greatest living architects and town-planners, Professor Abercrombie is probably most widely known for his work in the Greater London scheme. That he would consider all important phases of Hong Kong’s development was implied by Sir Patrick in answers given at a press conference. Not only will he plan for improvement of the congested city of Victoria, with its narrow streets and crowded tenements clinging between hill and harbour, but he will study possibilities of increasing the city’s area by reclamation. Land, sea and air communications will also be studied by Sir Patrick, who in discussing cross-harbour traffic problems suggested that because of topography and other factors, a tunnel rather than a bridge would be more suitable for Hong Kong if an alternative to existing surface communication were deemed advisable.
