HALF OFF ROAD

BRITISH PRIVATE CARS PLEASURE DRIVING OVER LONDON, Dec. 1. Nearly half the private cars in Britain came off the roads at midnight last night, when pleasure motoring ended for the country’s 800,000 motorists and 200,000 motor-cyclists. No petrol may now be used for other than essential purposes. The end of the basic petrol ration will throw thousands more into the daily queues for public transport. The London Transport Board says that country areas already report slightly increased loads, but every available vehicle has been pushed into service.

The services on one London Underground line will be increased by 22 per cent.,' but the other lines are already at capacity. Hundreds of special police will be detailed to enforce the use of supplementry coupons for the purpose for which they are issued. Their misuse will bring fines of up to £SOO and prison sentences. Snap checks will be made along all roads from today.

Bicycle sales are reported to have gone up, and many factories are building cycle sheds for parking.
