EX-PREMIER DEAD

EARL BALDWIN DIED DURING SLEEP (11 a.m.) LONDON. Dec. 14. The death is announced of Earl Baldwin, at his home at Stourport. Earl Baldwin who was suffering from a slight cold for a few days died in his sleep at Astley Hall. A servant found him dead when he went to call him this morning.

The title goes to his son, Viscount Corvedale, M.P. for Paisley where a by-election will be caused. The Prime Minister, Mr C. R. Attlee on hearing of Earl Baldwin’s death said “Earl Baldwin was one of the outstanding statesmen of our time and a great parliamentarian. Though I was his political opponent, I, like so many of my colleagues in the Labour Party, enjoyed most friendly relations with him and admired his great qualities.” Earl Baldwin was Prime Minister from 1935 to 1937 when he was elevated to peerage.
