COMMUNISTS SURROUNDED MAJOR CHINESE BATTLE (11 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Dec. 12. The big battle in south-east Honan which has been in progress without letup for the past eight days entered its final phase today as 100,000 Government troops began a general advance on surrounded remnants of General Liu Po Cheng’s army which emerged from its Taipeh Mountain .base a little over a week ago in a bid to reach Szechuan Province. It is believed that this Red force, originally 50,000 strong, now numbers no more than 20,000.
