VISITORS AND GUESTS

Miss K. J. Mirrielses, who travels to England by the Ruahine this month, left Gisborne today for Tauranga and Auckland- She will return to Gisborne early next week before going to Wellington, from which port the Ruahine departs. Mrs Walter Nash has entered a private hospital in Wellington for treatment and is likely to remain there for several weeks. Mr and Mrs H. D. C. Lange, and Miss Pat Lange, Matawhero, are visiting Putorino for the Lange-Hunt wedding today. Mrs R. W. Shaw, Mangatuna, is another Gisborne visitor to Putorino for the Lange-Hunt wedding. Mr and Mrs C. Tietjen, Mr J. Tietjen, Bushmere, and Mr and Mrs Ray Tietjen, “Oaklands,” Bushmere, all left yesterday for Putorino to attend the Lange-Hunt wedding. Mr and Mrs W. S. Taylor and family, Hinaki street, have returned home following a trip to Auckland. Mr and Mrs C. Allen, Colombo street, Christchurch, who have been visiting Gisborne, have returned home. Miss Jan Kelly, who has been in Gisborne for the past eight months or so, left yesterday for Auckland, where she will continue her work as a beautician.

ENGAGEMENT

Nicliolson-Warner. —An engagement is announced between Maxwell Robert, youngest son of Mr and Mrs G. Nicholson, Auckland, and Ann Shirley, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs C. Warner, Gisborne.

YEAR CONCLUDES

The final meeting for the year of the Knox Young Wives and Mothers’ Club was held at the home of Mrs I. Crafts, Centennial crescent, on Wednesday and took the form of a social evening. This proved most enjoyable, competitions being won by Mesdames G. MacFarlane, I. McKay and G. Ferguson. Community singing and a delightful supper served by the social committee were enjoyed. Presentations of floral sprays to Mrs H. Dyson, president, and Mrs N. Redstone, retiring secretary, were made by Mrs McKay. The Christmas cake was won by Mi's G- Knox and the sales table was well patronised. Mrs McKay also presented Mrs Ferguson, who had made the cake, with a spray. Members were notified that the picnic which was to have been held had been indefinitely postponed.

TOLAGA GARDEN PARTY

The final meeting for 1947 of the Tolaga Bay branch of the W.D.FF., was held on Friday, December 3 in the form of a garden party at the home of the president, Mrs A. Donald. There was a splendid gathering of members and friends and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Business, was brief, mainly centering round a discussion of ways for raising funds towards the new Auckland rest home. At the conclusion of the business, everyone jointed in a competition which took them to all parts of Mrs Donald’s lovely garden. This was won by Mrs J. M. Fraser. After a delicious afternoon tea, visitors gathered again in the garden to hunt for a hidden parcel, which was eventually found by Mrs A. Wa'rburton. Regret was expressed that members of the Gisborne branch who had intended coming were unable to be present. The arrival of the bus at 5 p.m. to take members back to the township brought to a close a very happy afternoon.

An opportunity to wish Mr Eric G. Widdowson “bon voyage” before his departure this month for England was given to a large number of his friends at a social evening given by his parents, Mr and Mrs E. P. Widdowson, at the Waikanae Beach kiosk on Thursday evening. In short speeches during the,evening Mr E. P. Widdowson bade his son farewell, while on behalf of the assembled guests Mr C. G. Rigby wished the guest of honour well in his new sphere. Mr Eric Widdowson, in reply, thanked everyone for their good wishes and assured them that he would always remember his Gisborne friends. Several items were given during the evening, recitations being given by Mesdames N. Hooper and . Selwyn Woods, and Miss Joan Isbistet*. songs by Mrs Widdowson and Miss Annette Hamilton, and a piano-accordian solo by Mr H- R. Patterson. Dancing to music supplied by Mrs W. Thompson was enjoyed by the guests, extras being played by Mr S. Skeets. Mrs Widdowson received the guests wearing a green full-skirted frock with a spray of flowers.

DANNEVIRKE WEDDING

The wedding of Naomi Cecilia, second daughter of Mr and Mrs Gavin Paterson, Te Rehunga, and John Mills, only son of Mr and Mrs Walter Dobson, Dannevirke, was celebrated this month in Dannevirke. The bride was escorted by her father and wore a wedding frock of white Swiss needlerun lace with frills of organza on the full skirt and ruffled neckline. Her full-length tulle veil, forming a train, was held in place by a point lace tiara and she carried a white floral bouquet. She was attended by her sister, Miss Eunice Paterson, and by the bridegroom’s sister, Miss Ethel Dobson, who wore pink organdie frocks trimmed with accordian pleated frilling and who carried pink roses and carnations, the same flowers being worn in the hair. The bridegroom was attended by two of his fellow-officers who served with him in Tonga, Mr H. B. Williams, jun., Turihau, Gisborne, and Mr I. Nichol, Wellington. For travelling the bride wore a corn-flower-blue suit with navy hat and shoes. Their future home will be in Wellington.

FELICITATIONS RECEIVED

The centre of felicitations on Thursday evening was Miss Shirley Humphrey, whose coming-of-age was celebrated then. Friends gathered in force at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs H. D. Humphrey, Kaiti esplanade, for a five till seven party, the guest of honour choosing a floral silk frock for the occasion. Mrs Humphrey wore a tailored blue frock.

WEEK-END TENNIS

The following players took part in games at the Kaiti courts of the Gisborne Lawn Tennis Club last Saturday:—Mesdames F. R. Porter, E. R. Brown, E. and H. Stevenson; Misses E. M. Becdie, B. Cameron, P. Chrisp, B. Cooper, B. Davis, D. Fraser, N. Haisman, J- James, B. Langland, J. Macrae, J. Morley, R. Miller, M. Musgrave, M. McGregor, L. Parker, E. Patchett, V. Salmon, J. Scott. M. Simpson, B. Wellborne, and P. Wickens..

A GRADE CROQUET

Very close games were a feature of the second round of inter-club croquet played by the Gisborne and Turanga A grade players this week. Each club secured one win. The players were— Gisborne: Mesdames J. Booth, G. Henderson, P. Hockley and H. Patterson. Turanga: Mesdames E. Derbyshire, C. W. Bayliss, J. F. Donnelly and R. L. Grey. Carnations and honeysuckle decorated the afternoon tea tables.

REPERTORY FAREWELL

Oil Wednesday evening the committee of the Gisborne Repertory Society met to say -farewell to Miss Jean Russell, who is leaving for England early in the new year. Miss Ellen Millar and Mr W. Kohn, on behalf of those present and all the members, spoke of the great help Miss Russell had been to the society, and hoped that during her visit abroad she would be able to make contacts with other dramatic societies and further her interest in this work. The best wishes of the society were tended also to Miss Joan Mirrielees and Mr Eric Widdowson, who have both taken an active interest in the theatre and who are shortly going overseas.

GOLDEN WEDDING

At present resident in Tauranga but formerly well known in Gisborne, Mr and Mrs Arthur Hicks celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at a family function held in Te Puke recently. The majority of the members of the family were able to be present, apologies and telegrams being received from Mr A. G. Hicks, Gisborne, and Mr Arthur Hicks, Wellington. The Mayor of Te Puke, Mr W. E. Hookey, congratulated the couple on the attainment of their golden wedding anniversary and presented them with a fireside chair as a token of esteem from their many friends. The family’s congratulations were conveyed by Mr Val Hicks, who presented Mr and Mrs Hicks with an envelope on behalf of the family. Mr Hicks suitably replied.

21ST PARTY

Happy celebrant of her twenty-first birthday last Tuesday was Miss Jess. Watt, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Watt, who gave a party for about 70 friends at the rowing club hall to celebrate the occasion. Nursing friends from the Cook Hospital were among the guests who were entertained to a sit-down tea followed by a dance, for which Mrs Heeney supplied the music with Mr A. McKenzie directing the dancingThe celebrant was in a white nylon sheer frock with narrow frilling at the neckline, sleeve edges and at the waist. Her mother had chosen a navy, satinbacked crepe, white embroidered. Dance winners during the evening were Miss B. Satchell and Mr R._ Huckstable and Miss June Percy-White and Mr Jack Watt. . , Mr Watt proposed his daughter s health and the cake was cut to the accompaniment of musical honours.
