LUXURY LINER

NEW CARONIA TO WIN DOLLARS COMFORT IS KEYNOTE LONDON, Nov. 20. Britain’s latest bid for maritime supremacy is the 34,000-ton Cunard-White Star liner Caronia, which was launched by Princess Elizabeth at Clydebank. Designed and built primarily for the luxury Atlantic trade, and for pleasure cruising, the Caronia emphasises Britain's great need to win American dollars from the passenger trade between America and Europe. Her superstructure and exterior lines will be streamlined to a greater degree than any ship afloat. She will have none of the tracery of mast rigging or guys that shroud the decks of present-day liners, and the decks will be free of ventilator cowls and isolated deck houses. Life aboard will be more comfortable than in most hotels, with sun decks with open air swimming pools, lidos, verandah cafes, dancing terraces, bars, garden lounges, _ gymnasiums, with medicinal baths, a cinema to seat 300, and sumptuous dining rooms and furnishings. State rc.oms once luxurious when fitted with hot and cold water, will be fitted also with ice water taps. All public rooms will be air-conditioned. The ship will also provide a laundry and first-class valeting service. The Caronia will be driven, by two triple expansion turbine engines, fed by superheated boilers. All winches steering gear, capstans and kitchens will be electrically powered. Fitting her out is expected to take about a year.
