ANTARCTIC RESEARCH
PERMANENT BASE SOUGHT
CANBERRA, Nov. 7. The Art ship of the Australian. Antarctic research expedition will leave Melbourne on November 14 for Heard Island. A scientific base will be established there as part of the long-range plan to develop Australian Antarctic territory. After a conference with the leader of the expedition, Group Captain S. A. C. Campbell, the Prime Minister, Mr. J B. Chifiey, announced that this year three separate parties would be established in or near the Antarctic. The purposes of the expedition would be, first, to maintain Australian and British interests in the Antarctic; secondly, to find a suitable site for a permanent base and to survey unexplored sections of the Australian Antarctic coastline; and thirdly, to carry out scientific work which should be of great value to Australia. A tank landing ship will estabish a fuel base on Heard Island for the Wyatt Earp and will take a similar party to Macquarie Island, south-east of Australia. The mother ship Wyatt Earp will leave Hobart in December to carry out the main reconnaissance.
