GREAT OVATION

TRIUMPHAL RETURN

CHRISTCHURCH CROWDS

DENIAL OF ENGAGEMENT ;<P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 10.

Miss Mary Wootton, winner of the “Miss New Zealand” contest, made a triumphal return to Christchurch on Saturday. She arrived by plane and was greeted at the airport by a big crowd of friends and supporters and by two of the other contestants in the competition. In the evening she appeared before a crowd of 5000 at the New Zealand Industries Fair and was given a great ovation.

In an interview Miss Wootton denied that she intended to become engaged before her trip to Britain. During an official function in Wellington last week the Leader of - the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland remarked that Miss Wootton was not at present a member of his electorate, but if something he had heard recently eventuated, she would become one in the near future.

At the time the remarks were made she was so excited that she did not near them, said Miss Wootton, nad it..was not until next day that they were brought to her notice. She did not know what Mr. Holland had in mind when he made those remarks.
