CONVICTS’ GOOD TIME
BLACKMARKET FORTUNES SOME PAID INCOME TAX NEW YORK, Sept. 19. Convicts who went shooting during their prison terms are mentioned among a list cf prison abuses uncovered by a legislative committee in the State of Oklahoma. The committee discovered that vice and corruption were rampant. Convicted murderers were paroled with their pockets bulging with money. _ One inmate made £7BOO while serving al9 months’ sentence. A number of inmates netted £ls a day selling prisonmade goods, and even paid income tax on their earnings. A flourishing blackmarket existed in most prisons, with the connivance of the officials. Some devices employed to tutn a dishonest penny were "likely to confound the most corrupt financial wizard.’’
The prisoners’ influence reached such high places that they were able to halt previous legislative investigations.
