WAIPAOA FATALITY
YOUNG MAN SHOT INQUEST ADJOURNED A young farm labourer was found dead in his whare on Home Bush station, Waipaoa yesterday morning with an automatic pistol beside him. An inquest was opened before the coroner, Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in Gisborne this morning and adjourned sine die. The deceased was Mr. Patrick George Land, aged 24, who for the past six mohths had been employed by Mr. I. H. Newman on Home Bush station.
Evidence of identification was given at the inquest by Ivan Hilary Newman, who stated that Land lived in a whare 30ft. from his house on Home Bush station. On Saturday, the witness and his wife went to the Gisborne Show, but the deceased would not go. When they returned on Saturday evening Land appeared quite normal and had his tea with the family, later returning to his own whare. About 8 a.m. on Sunday Mrs. Newman saw the deceased lying on the floor of his whare. She called the witness, who in investigation thought that Land had been dead for some hours. An automatic pistol belonging to Land was lying beside him, near his feet.
