NEW ZEALAND CATTLE

Sir, —I was surprised to read in your issue of Saturday the reported statement made by the judge of the Aberdeen Angus section at the recent Poverty Bay A. and P. Assn. Show, Mr. G. V. Smith, that 80 per cent, of the beef cattle in New Zealand are Aberdeen Angus If this statement could be supported by facts it would be good breed porpaganda; but I am quite happy to leave it to the public to decide whether it would be as good as the concrete visual advertisement given to the Hereord breed by the display of these "nttle at this year’s Poverty Bay Show in comparison to that made by the Aberdeen Angus breed I will freey admit that in some districts. such as Hawke’s Bay, the Aberdeen Angus breed predominate in numbers; but in the Gisborne district it would be hard to say whether there are more Aberdeen Angus or Herefoid cattle bred. I would‘venture to estimate that the Shorthorn and Hereford cattle, together with the various crosses of these breeas with one another and the Aberdeen Angus, are not very far behind the straight-bred Aberdeen Angus cattle in numbers in this country. l cann ° t p l°' duce facts to substantiate this, but my guess should be as good as Mr. Smith s. F. E. HUMPHREYS President, New Zealand Hereford Cattle Breeders Assn.
