RECORD INTERNATIONAL EVENT GISBORNE PROMINENT The prominent place in archery achieved by Gisborne exponents has again been demonstrated by their success in the latest international competition conducted under the auspices of the National Archery Association of America. I In this season’s event, the 20th anniversary contest, W. J. Burton, of the Gisborne club, recorded the highest individual score for the second year in succession, and the club supplied the five leading scorers in the Dominion No. 1 team which gained third place among the 96 teams representing clubs throughout the United States, Hawaii, Cuba and New Zealand. The individual competitors totalled 408. Burton’s success means that he retains the Kore T- Duryee Perpetual Memorial Trophy awarded annually to the top individual scorer. Record Eclipsed Scoring is assessed on the average of five • rounds, each with a possible of 810. Burton returned an average of 801.6 and eclipsed his • own record for the association competitions ! set in the previous season at 799.6. In his . best round Burton registered 806, only four . less than the possible. Burton equalled that remarkable score in ■ the previous season and is joint holder of the I record for a round with John Schwoegler, of 1 Madison, Wisconsin, U.S.A., who scored 806 1 in 1944. j iii each round 90 nrrows were used. His total in the five rounds which gave this season's winning average of 801.6 were 806. 804, SO2, 802, 794. Following Burton in this Benson's contest came Winston Hussey, of Cleveland, Ohio, who returned an average of 799.6 points for the five rounds, in the best of which he recorded 804, and third place was taken by Tony Jongresso, of Denver, Colorado, whose average was 790.4 with a top score of 802. Next in succession to Burton in the New Zealand competitors came four members of the Gisborne club, F. Jeune, G. Wootton, N. Gedye and'E. Sodersten. They were respectively 13th, 61st., 72nd. and 74th on the international list. Besides the five of the New Zealand No. 1 team which gained third place among the 96, the Gisborne club supplied six of the Dominion No. 2 team which secured 10th place and four of the No. 3 team which ran into 38th position.
