Mr. John Seppelt, South Australia, is touring New Zealand for three months in order to acquaint himself with the sales of wine in New Zealand. He is accompanied by Messrs. Nathan and KBatten, also of South Australia. Known to visitors to Tauranga from all parts of New Zealand, Miss Alice Heron Maxwell, of “The Elms,’’ celebrated her S7th birthday on Saturday. Born in Kilmore, Victoria, on October 4, 1860. where her father was a Presbyterian minister. Miss Maxwell went to Wellington in 1865. The family lived in Wadestown when theirs was the only house there. Miss Maxwell went to Tauranga 60 years ago following the deaths of Archdeacon A. N. Brown, a pioneer missionary in the Bay of Plenty, and Mrs.- Brown, who was Miss Maxwell’s aunt The mission house, Archdeacon Brown’s home, and one of the earliest houses in New Zealand has been lived in continuously for over a century. It was closelv linked with the battle for Gate Pa and earlier historical events in the district.. .P.A. The retirement of Lieut.-Colonel E. L. C. Bown, 0.8. E., was announced in Wellington on Saturday by the Minister of Defence, Mr- F. Jones. Colonel Bown joined the First N.Z.E.F. in December, 1914, and after serving overseas, where he was wounded, was commissioned in the N-Z. Staff Corps in 1919- On the outbreak of the last war he was chief ordnance officer at the main ordnance depot, Trentham, and also commanding officer of the N.Z.A.O.C. As such he was responsible for eauipping all the armed forces in New Zealand and the Pacific and for maintaining the clothing requirements of the Second N.Z.E.F. in the Middle East. The Minister stated that Colonel Bown had been a most popular and efficient officer, and his retirement would be felt both bv his corps and the nrmv as a whole.—P.A
