Sailing bv the Akaroa on Thursday are Mr. and Mrs. John Shone and family, Cobden street, whose destination is Mount Gambier, South Australia. They will visit Mrs. Shone’s family there. BRIDGE AT WOMEN’S CLUB

A most enjoyable bridge evening was held at the Gisborne Women’s club rooms last Wednesday in aid of the Heni Materoa Childrens’ Home.

The lioral decorations were in the capable hands of Mesdames Perry and Walworth, and were carried out with apple blossom, Iceland poppies and fresias. Mrs. N. Hooper, the president, welcomed the guests, and Mrs. F. Blunt, convener, was in charge of the cards. Prizes were presented by Mesdames Perry, McKeaguo, Samson, Clare, Begg and Gilmer, and were won by Mrs. Stratchan, Miss Little. Mrs. Allen and Miss Jackson. A dainty buffet supper was served by the bridge committee. PLEASANT SOCIAL An especially enjoyable social afternoon was held at tlio rooms of tho Old Folks’ Association on Thursday, and a large number of members and friends were welcomed by the lady president, Mrs. I. A. Salt. Bowls and troughs of pretty spring blooms wero arranged in the rooms. The following items were given:—Vocal duet, Mesdames Morrow and Knox; vocal solo, Mrs. Betterngo; recitation, Annette Finucano. The accompanists were Mesdames A. Elliott and S. Ledger. Sister Pritchard presented the club with a picture and accompanied tho presentation with a complimentary speech. Games and competitions followed, a mystery parcel being won by Mr, McLeod. Mrs, Elliott led community singing. An enjoyable afternoon tea was provided by the lady members. 1 Messrs. Fox and Carter supervised euchre play at 12 tables at the club recently, and the prize-winners were: —Ladies.—Mrs, Manly, 1: Mrs. Giddall, 2. Mon. —Messrs. Anderson, Pouison and Carter, equal, 1. COUNCIL OF WOMEN The monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of the National Council of Women was held on Thursday afternoon, Mrs. W. E, Goffe presiding. Among tho letters received was one from the Dominion secretary dealing with remits sent by this branch on the need for more women police. Two members were asked to supply further details. A letter from tho Department of Labour and Employment advising particulars of the Government home aid service, was discussed, and the meeting decided that a letter of appreciation and a request for additional information be written to tho department. The Dominion secretary advised than_ an N.CAV. conference would bo held in Wellington on Octobofi 7tb and Bth and expressed tho hope that one or more representatives from Gisborne would bo in attendance. Tho subject of homes for old people in Gisborne was again discussod and it was decided to make further efforts to interest tho Gisborne Borough Council. At the conclusion of business afternoon tea was served. W.I. OFFICERS’ SCHOOL Mrs. W. Deans, Canterbury, a member of the Dominion executive of the Women’s Institutes, conducted a school for officers and members of that organisation in Gisborno on Friday, so that they could learn more of tho aims and objects of the institute, co-opera-tion and to work together. It was also held in order to give thepi the confidence to load. With her wide experience and charming personality, Mrs. Dean’s talk provided members with an interesting study and it was followed with the keenest intorost, many questions being asked. Tho function was an all-day one, at tho Bon Accord, and there was a discussion on how to send more faod to Britain, this being one of the Women's Institutes’ objects, and plans wero submitted for the collection of fat. Discussion also centrod around adult education and tho employment of part-time tutors to tako classes in singing and drama. Mrs. Deans reported on the delegation now in Amsterdam at the conference of the Associated Countrywomen of the World. The Dominion secretary, Mrs. Horne and Miss Amy Kane were both there and on their return would broadcast. Miss Kane also would tour the institutes and give talks to members. Mrs. Deans said that institutes should give hospitality to English nurses, and that preparation should be commencing for the Dominion conference next year.

Mrs. E. M. Monckton, president of the P.B. Federation, thanked tho visitor for her enlightening address.

CHRISTENING AT'WAINUI

Mr. and Mrs. Randall Witters’ infant son, Michael Gibson, was christened at their home at Wainui Beach on Sunday and for the occasion wore an old family christening robe of lace and fine silk. Following the ceremony there was an informal family gathering. ANGLICAN WOMEN’S SOCIAL

The Anglican Women's Association’s social afternoon, held on Saturday, proved a most enjoyable function. A hring-and-buy tablo was very popular and later afternoon tea was dispensed by the committee nnd helpers. Floral decorations of rhododendrons, slocks and spring flowers struc ka pleasant note, and were thp work of tho president, Mrs. H. Gilmer, and members of the committee. Future functions have been arranged. The unnual meeting will be held in October. HAPPY PARTY Mr. and,.Airs. E. P. Widdowson gave a most. enjoyable party on Saturday, for the friends of their son, Mr. Denis Widdowson, at their home in Dickson street. Mrs. Widdowson received the guests wearing a pink satin-backed crepe frock with a mauve and pink spray. The house was decorated with Iceland poppies and stocks. There was a delicious supper, and as the party was for Mr. Denis Widdowson’s birthday, there were musical honours, to which ho suitably replied. DANCING CLASS BREAK-UP Junior members of Miss Annette JexBlake’s ballroom dancing class had their break-up on Friday, when they gathered in the ballroom at tho home of Miss W. Lysnar, Stout street, with their parents. Miss Jex-Blake wore a white marquisette frock with lace insertions and a red spray, and Miss F. Loffler was in a blue and white pin-spotted frock with a cyclamen sash and flowers.

The pupils demonstrated various dances for an hour or so and later there were novelty dances and supper was served. Mrs. E. Stevenson was at the piano. The class does not reopen until April.

BADMINTON WIND-UP Badminton enthusiasts belonging to the Gisborne Badminton Club, with their friends, turned out .in strength on Saturday night at tho Kahutia Bowling Club’s pavilion when tho club ran an ende-of-season social and dance combined with a social in honour of a visiting team from Napier. Dancing was to Mr. H. Lenane's music and two much-appreciated performers were Mr. D. G. Dyer, who gave a recitation, and Mr. R. Sloan, who contributed vocal solos. An attractive buffet, supper was served, and Mr. Ivan Tyerman, on behalf of the Gisborne Club, gavo the Napier visitors an official welcome, Mr. R. M. Schwass responding on behalf of tho touring team. NGATAPA DANCE

The Ngatapa Hall on Saturday night proved too small for the 250 to 800 people who attended an end-of-season dance organised by the Ngatapa Rugby Sub-union. Messrs. S, Hamilton and R. H. Workman were the organisers and were assisted by the management committee and several ladies. There was an excellent suppor, and Miss Lena Ruru supplied the music. Opportunity was taken by Mr. A. 11. Russell to lead musical honours for Mr. Angus Dods on behalf of the Ngatapa-Rere subunion for his good efforts for that organisation. There were a number of dinner parties in the district the same night, the hostesses including Mesdames Angus Dods, A. H. Russell. H. E. Cave, A. W. Broadhurst and C. F. Horne. BRIDE’S GIFT PARTIES Miss Nancy Steele was the guest of honour at a gift afternoon held recently at tho residence of Mrs. Cleve Hillyard. Kahutia street, The hostess was Miss Denise Somerville, who was one of tho bridesmaids at the wedding. Several competitions were held. After a tasty afternoon tea, the bride-elect, w-ho wore a green wool georgette frock, opened the gift parcels. Her mother, Mrs. L. J. Steele, was attired in a navy rep frock ahd the hostess was wearing pink. At the conclusion. Miss Steele thanked tho hostess and friends and relations for an enjoyable afternoon.

Another party for the same bride was a miscellaneous one, given by Mrs. C. Hillyard and her daughter, Mrs. Geoff Torrie, at the home of Mrs. Hillyard. Miss Steele looked charming in a floral frock in green tonings. Her mother woro a smart navy frock. Games and competitions pleasantly passed tho time, the rooms being decorated with Iceland poppies. Tho prospective bridesmaid, Miss Denise Somerville, who was wearing a green and grey model frock, assisted in the opening of the gifts.
