FILM CAUSES RIOT

CHINESE BARBERS' BAN

NEW YORK, Sept. 26.

Two policemen were hurt in violent fighting and two hundred barbers were arrested in riots over “Phoney Phoenix,” a film about a hairdresser seducing a rich man’s concubine, says the United Press correspondent in Hankow. The rioting occurred in front of two cinemas showing the film. Trouble over the film originally began in Shanghai after which parts of the film were cut and and a prologue praising the sacredness of labour was added. Nevertheless Hankow barbers demanded the banning of the film even before thev had seen it.
