GISBORNE RUGBY DEFEAT OF VISITORS PLAY IN THREE GAMES Three Gisborne Rugby clubs on Saturday closed the season with games on the Oval grounds against sides from the Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay union areas. The home teams were successful in each match. Mild, sunny weather and dry grounds favoured fast, open play, t MARIST JUNIORS’ WIN Playing on No. 2 ground Gisborne Marist juniors defeated the St. Michael’s, Rotorua, junior fifteen by 10 points to three. Speedy action _ with territorial honours very evenly divided marked the play. Each side registered one try, goal kicks accounting for the winning margin. The five-eighth, T. Patterson, scored the Marist try. The centre, P. Storey, kicked a penalty goal and the fiveeighth, F. Lee, a field goal. For St. Michael's, the scorer was the fiveeighth, S Kusab’s. Mr. N. Rivers was the referee. St. Michael’s took the runner-up position in the Rotorua sub union junior championship this season. Marist juniors were one of the strongest teams among the nine who took part in the Poverty Bay competition. They finished in fourth position on the ladder. Mr. T. Masters, of Rotorua, manager of the visiting team, and Mr. J. Ferguson, Gisborne, have donated a cup to be contested annually on alternate grounds by the junior fifteens of St. Michael’s, Rotorua, and Gisborne Marist. HASTINGS CHAMPIONS Hastings H.S 0.8. juniors, champion and unbeaten team in the Hastings subunion competition, met defeat on No. 3 ground at the hands of a Gisborne H. 5.0.8 junior side reinforced by the High School wing, W. Bignell, and forward, W. Robinson, the Poverty Bay rep. full-back, B. Preston, who was the captain of the Gisborne H. 5.0.8. (A) juniors at the commencement of the season, and the Poverty Bay front-row forward, VV. Brown. The scores were 11 points to hree, though each side registered only one try. The forward, W Robinson, touched down for the home team. The fiveeighth, J. Chaffey, added the conversion and Bignell twice raised the (lags with penalty kicks. C. Helleur scored the visitors’ try. Mr. P. Balfour was the referee. TWENTY FOUR TO NIL In the early game ’Gisborne Marist thirds proved too strong for a Napier Marist fifteen, the score being 24 points to nil in favour of the home team. Tries were scored by B. Donovan (two) B. Garlick, A. Bignell, J Penny and R. Ferris two being converted by H. Thorstensen and one by H. Maxwell. Mr. P. Habib was the referee.
