CATS SLAUGHTERED

CARRIERS OF DISEASE? BRISBANE, Sept- 27. Hundreds of cat owners in Brisbane are killing their pets because they fear that cats may be carriers of gastroenteritis. Eighty-four children have died in Brisbane from -rstroenteritis since June of last year, and 27 children are now in hospital with The secretary of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Mr. O’Sullivan, fears that there will be a plague of rats in the city if the slaughter continues. More than 130 cats have been taken to the society for destruction in the past two days.’ All were fine, healthy animals and, according to Mr. O’Sullivan, were making a useless sacrifice. The director of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Dr. I. Mackerras, said there was no definite proof yet that cats were carriers of gastroenteritis.
