“MORE SATISFIED”

SUPPLY AUTHORITIES VISIT TO DAM SITES KARAPIRO AND ARAPUNI (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 29. The view that the delegates would return to their boards feeling more satisfied about the power supply position after having seen the two stations was expressed by Mr. J. A. Nash, president of the Electric Power Boards’ and Supply Authorities’ Association, after members, secretaries and engineers of the supply authorities throughout New Zealand had inspected the hydro-electricity schemes at Karapiro and Arapuni on Saturday. Special buses and private cars left Auckland early on Saturday morning for Karapiro, where the members were shown the general lay-out of the scheme by the engineers of the department and were then taken through the power house and control room. Arapuni Inspection

The party then travelled to Arapuni, where, after lunch, they were shown the larger power house, dam. spillway and overflow channel. Dinner was provided at Hamilton on the return journey, some of the delegates catching the south-bound express there for their homes.

Mi. Nash said the shortage of power was a serious matter and would cause a great deal of anxiety to the suppiy authorities. However, notwithstanding the loss of 100,000 k.v.a. at Horahora, the 60.000 k.v.a. that were being generated at Karapiro would afford temporary relief to the North Island. Next Unit in Six Months

The boards had been advised that within six months it would be possible to have the remaining generator in action, giving a total of 90,000 k.v.a. from Karapiro, added Mr. Nash. This depended upon whether the department was fortunate enough to get the remaining material for the third generator in time and provided that strikes or lock-outs, for which the Minister could not be held responsible, did not occur.

The president of the Electricity upnlv Association of Australia, Mr. C. G. H. McDonald, of Melbourne, said he was very impressed with the work done at Karapiro and Arapuni.
